What makes us human?
Well, it isn't the money you make,
it isn't the cars that you drive
or your house by the lake.
It’s what we give
without needing to receive.
It’s the heart that we hold
as a symbol of peace.
What makes us human?
It isn't greed and hate,
instead, we are what we eat,
what we serve on our plate,
the food we share with friends.
It’s the moments we spend
in joyful company.
It isn't the hours of drudgery
earning money
for the already rich aristocracy.
What makes us human?
It isn't sitting staring at screens
or ringing people to sell some
company dreams.
It isn't sailing away
on a yacht overseas,
or swimming in piles of money
whilst the homeless sit
begging on their knees.
What makes us human?
It isn't zeroes and ones,
we are more complex and fun,
we have artistic flair,
we have beauty to share,
we have all the tears that may run,
but still, we have smiles
as big as the sun.
Because the things
that make us human
are more precious
than any hurt that can be done.
So why
when we are born are we
forced into slave hood?
Told to ignore
what makes humanity good?
Instead, we are told
to conform to the social norms.
The same social norms
that will see you shunned
if you so much as read a book.
And don’t dare be sick
the powerful won’t give a fuck.
Casting you aside without
so much as a second look.
We are taught from a young age
that the most important thing
is earning a wage,
or putting it another way
locking ourselves in a cage
to make someone
a whole lot richer
whilst our rich tapestries
get torn and frayed.
