January nights

The cold bites

on these early

January nights.

The remaining

fairy lights blink

for one last merry show.

Moonlight lands

on the ground

in a prelude of the snow

about to fall all around,

and my breath hangs

in clouds, a foot from my face

before evaporating into the air.

A voyager on a mission to space.

I stand in awe.

Watching

as the snow

gradually starts to fall.

A light dust,

like dandelion seeds

drifting slowly downwards.

Forming a crust of ice.

Glittering crystal coats the ground.

In my head a sound

like chimes every time

a stray snowflake lands

delicately at my feet.

For one second

I don’t miss the heat,

I’m so transfixed by the way

the shards land upon the seat,

by the way the air is bleached in white.

Dulling the pigment from the night.

The dusting

becomes a flurry

as hurriedly more snow

joins the scouting party.

The air now a speckled blanket

covering every view.

A thin membrane

into a world that we once knew.

Now replaced

by the magic

that drifts in front of you.

The air quiet now

as if all sound has been

sucked dry.

All but the crunch

as you place one foot

onto the clean untouched

canvas that has been laid out.
