Past the restaurant,
boarded up so fast
the tables still
set for service.
Cutlery, menus
and glasses, sat
now just dusty
reminders
of a meal once
served to us, where
we gazed lovingly
into the futures eyes
and thought we saw
a glowing sunrise.
Now it sits,
like my heart,
shuttered,
cobwebs
catching
the dust
but strangely
clear of clutter
as if everyone
disappeared
in the blink of an eye.
A sunset over
a lover’s sky.
I wonder
did they know?
Was it such a blow
to set the tables
then find there was
no service to follow?
Did we know?
Could we see that the sunrise
was not to stay
and that after the day
sunset would always fall our way.
That love would fade away
Into just a hazy memory
if we couldn't keep the lights on
when the dark of winter
has come to play.
