We pass street signs,
roads to nowhere,
pothole lined.
Like travelling back
Into the mists of time.
Sharp turns,
tyre marks show danger zones.
Off the beaten path,
dirt road trails endeavour to stop us in our tracks,
try to end our tales
Postcard cottages,
picture book views,
quaint little villages we pass through.
Seeking beauty - some majestic treasure.
A place hidden from maps,
a shoreline cliffside,
crumbling under gravity's pressure.
Views that bring us such pleasure,
watching sunsets at our leisure
Morning light,
sunrise over hilltop paradise.
Our destination, unplanned,
let the road guide,
through the grassland,
under graffiti tagged bridges
connecting fields across the asphalt scars
of this wondrous countryside
and the views it imparts.
Energy flagging,
eye lids sagging.
Weary, we wonder in.
A welcome inn with logs burning,
some hearty food to restoke the fires.
A drink to quench the thirst is what we desire.
A room for the night,
doesn't have to be a palatial retreat,
just a place for sleep
and it's back on the road again.
We have so much more beauty to seek,
so much to be shown.
When we take the road unknown.
