Review -

Thank you Author Zowie Norris

It is a rare pleasure to watch an artist evolve,
and with "With Love from Kyle Coare,"
we are witnessing a significant stylistic pivot that feels
both daring and deeply personal.
Having followed Kyle’s journey on Instagram
through several collections and experienced
the raw energy of his live performances,
I went into this book expecting his signature
punchy delivery. Instead, I found something
more atmospheric, ethereal, and layered.

While this may not be his "usual" style,
it is arguably his most evocative work to date.

Kyle has always had a way with words,
but in this collection, his use of metaphor
is the undisputed star. He moves away
from literal storytelling into a dreamlike
landscape where emotions take on physical,
often cosmic, forms.

Here are some of my favourites;

‘Confetti Cannon" Where Kyle transforms
the act of vulnerability into a mechanical explosion,
asking if the recipient would "catch the strands"
or walk away in shame. It’s a brilliant way to
illustrate the messiness of an open heart.

‘Bed of Nails’ - He masterfully uses juxtaposition.
The image of lying on piercing nails yet feeling
like one is "floating on fluffy cloud pillows" perfectly
captures how the presence of the right person can render
even the harshest reality painless.

‘Swirling through Constellations' - Kyle expands his scope
to the celestial, personifying the stars as a
"distant heart pulsing with words." It’s expansive
romantic, and shows a new level of ambition in his writing.

The recurring motif of water and drowning
throughout the collection - specifically in "Drowning in Love"
showcases a poet grappling with the overwhelming
nature of affection. He describes love not as a static feeling,
but as a rising tide, moving from "brushing ankles" to "up to the waist."

His style here is less about the rhythmic "slam" of his live sets
and more about a slow, rhythmic pulse. The poems breathe
on the page, utilising more white space and delicate phrasing,
such as the "sentient smiles" and "reservoir of words"
found in "Precious Time."

This collection feels like a private conversation
whispered in a crowded room. It is softer than his
previous work, yet it hits harder because of its vulnerability.

"With Love" is a testament to the fact that love
is a "key to a locked future,"
and Kyle Coare has found a way
to turn that key for his readers.
