Hounded

I've heard him howl

through my own tears.

When I hear

the screaming in my ears,

I've felt him near.

Growling, sensing the fear,

ready to pounce.

Always just a step behind.

waiting for the moment

I lose my mind

and I scream to the sky.

Won't you clear this pollution from my eyes,

the grit covered corneas

just bring sighs.

I've watched

as he walks

just a few steps away.

I've seen his jaws,

full of menace,

canines all bloodstained

and rotting with decay

but he walks after me.

Hunter to my prey.

So, I shout and pray,

will anyone listen to what I say?

But the words just fade

and desert me again today.

And that big black dog

keeps pace

following me home.

Walking in my shadow,

in my personal space,

doesn't matter

how far away I roam.

He always seems

just a step behind me.

Chasing my skin covered bones

and I say Lord. Will you spare me.

But he doesn't listen to my pleas.

So, I walk on regardless.

through the ever-darkening trees.

Little Wins

Zoning out.

The sounds buzz

a little too close,

like bees

trying to get inside.

You lose your mind,

little by little every time.

The next words are a blur.

A stream of unconscious noise,

filling the dead air

in between your ears.

You start to twitch,

it's like your heart

is beating

too slowly or maybe too quick.

You grip your neck tightly

trying to find a pulse

but nothing

is coming through.

You've felt this empty room a million times.

In crowded places it's so much worse.

You feel exposed,

confused,

like the walls

are closing in on you.

It's no use,

you think.

Falling

before you give yourself

the chance to sink.

It's a mess,

scribbled drawings

cover the walls of your mind.

It's a mess.

You feel like your mind is not working,

you feel stressed.

It's a mess.

A wastepaper bin filled to the brim

with empty thoughts

over which you skim,

realising that none

fit the situation

you currently find yourself in.

So, you crawl through the clutter,

all the time in the real world

you just stand and sort of mutter.

Not making much sense.

Overstimulated by the lights,

the sounds.

Overwhelmed by the thoughts

screaming loud.

So, you begin to shut down.

Standing slouched,

like a deer in the headlights.

Slowly giving up the fight.

Sometimes you just need to step back.

and observe yourself.

Sometimes you need to leave

and let music soothe.

Breathe.

ITS NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK.

Breathe.

ITS NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK.

Breathe.

Let the air fill your lungs,

then feel it leave.

You are still alive,

and every step forwards is a win,

even if it sometimes

takes a while to sink in.

Hurdles on the track

Obstacles in your path,

setbacks.

Hurdles on the track.

You can jump them,

crush them underfoot

Climb over or under.

Don't let them trip you up

as you persevere through,

all that is troubling you.

Keep going. Don't stop.

The track is long,

but the destination is not.

Just keep on going

as the hurdles

get further and wider apart,

as they get lower,

easier to step over.

As they disappear

somewhere back,

over the horizon.

and you have

a clear track ahead

and the sun is rising.
