Porcupine

Pull back the bow,

let your arrows fly,

into my skin they pierce

but I don't fall and die.

I stumble,

struggle to stay afoot

but I keep on walking,

mouth sewn shut.

I won't let

your poison darts

pollute my heart,

or cut me down.

I'll just keep bleeding

all over town.

Let your arrows

pierce the air,

ripping wounds

in the moonless sky

like blinking stars

crying out.

They penetrate deep,

your arrows of doubt.

I feel my blood seep

but I don't fall and die.

I keep walking.

So let your arrows fly.

I won't let this pain win,

just feel them

like a porcupine

with prickly hairs

sticking out of my skin.

Let your arrows

cut the night in two.

They won't do the job

you want them to do.

I won't fall.

I'll keep walking

through the barrage

as they rain.

Staining the ground

with the contents

of my gushing veins

but I've become so used to it

I no longer even feel the pain.

Formicarium

Floating in the atmosphere,

the world looks

so different from up here.

The scars torn over

her green lands, less visible.

The grey, red wounds,

cities strewn over lands of grass.

The glinting light

reflecting off glass.

Insect life always

following the same path.

Formicarium landmass.

Hive mind life spans miles,

colonising and destroying,

as I float away, I notice the lack of borders.

only drawn on to cause us to conform.

The insects all seem the same

going about their tribal games,

unaware that they are the ones

being played.

Circumnavigating

in metal birds, brains decayed.

Swarming like wasps,

drones to the order of the day.

Societal collapse.

A new bypass,

built to connect

two already connected paths.

Ant farm biodome.

Our green/blue home.

Floating further,

dark side of the moon

waves me on,

as I drift into the milky way.

No more milling crowds.

Earth just a speck

on the canvas of space,

a blot across which

the insects still race

but out here

I turn and face

the ever long evening song.

Seeing forever and a day

lying in front of me.

In awe I stare, at stars near but far,

but I miss the green, I miss the blue,

I swim back through the universal soup

and there in front of me,

the place I'm meant to be.

Not to be another insect,

nor to follow the swarm,

but to speak truth, to be human.

To live in this place.

The man who went to space,

to return with a smile on his face.

Pledge

I pledge allegiance

to the underdog.

The lost,

the geeks.

The weirdos and freaks.

I pledge myself

to hearts

that dare to dream.

I sit in the same

cheap seats.

I pledge allegiance

to these streets,

to shadows

on starlit nights.

I pledge myself

to those hearts that beat

but never know

their own light.

I give myself to all

who feel fear,

The ones

that want to walk

with a smile

beaming ear to ear

but are too scared

their happiness

could become a sneer.

To the ones

that live more at night,

The ones that fade

in sunlight,

I give my hand.

We are bound.

A band.

We hum a collective sound.

So let us speak.

The fear, the bullies

and the ones

that make us feel meek,

let us push them

into last week.
