Pebble beach

The pebbles on that beach

have spoken of our story

since the day

we lay in a sweet embrace,

watching the heavens

from that seemingly peaceful place.

They have whispered to the waters,

muttered to space, they murmured

of our love

excitedly

to the clouds that chase.

They resonate with the air,

the waves and the sea.

They let the words drift

wistfully into worlds

beyond the one

that our meagre eyes can see.

Where they land

crushed under the sounds

of grinding sand.

The hourglass of time

chiming as the sands

slowly trickle down.

They floated across countries,

over continents,

into the ozone. Our words

growing in the greenhouse

zone of earth.

Where they mimic

the tones of the wild,

they blend into the wind,

but underneath the breath of the world,

there sits another sound.

Still, almost silent.

Hidden for now.

It bides its time,

it sees the sun

rise and fall.

It awaits.

It listens

to the clock

ticking our fates.

It waits.

Knowing that soon

for us all

it will be too late.

It is learning,

listening

letting the words

churn inside,

knowing that

to survive it will need

to blend into our lives.

Become one with our voice,

infiltrate every sound,

every noise,

for the hum knows

it has no choice.

After the long goodbye

After the long goodbye

the horrible heartache

starts to take hold.

Blood runs cold.

The chill burns your skin.

Is there anything left

where your still heart

once lived?

You feel bereft. Too many tears shed.

Life keeps tugging at the threads

like a scarf worn thin,

no longer keeping you warm

against the ice within.

It's easier to go back

for more

when they pick up

the phone and call.

You fall back into a cycle

where hurt is the outcome

of every wheelspin.

You sink into the emotions

that are still breathing,

still crashing

like waves upon an ocean.

Your will starts to give in

and you give out again.

After the long goodbye

all you can do is ask why?

You question if you were

right to call it off,

if it was ever enough?

If it was ever really love?

You start to doubt,

watching as your

sense walks out.

You wonder aloud

will this last forever,

the pain inside

that clouds your senses.

The part of your life

that has been severed.

Will the wounds heal over time?

Meals for one.

Long hours searching

for some sun,

when all that walks along

is the darkness

that clings to your bones.

Cinema dates alone,

places avoided

for the taste of tears

brings back

memories of years

spent with your heart

sat in arrears

and the account

has been closed.

But you realise that life

is slowly seeping back,

you enjoy

your own company,

and not feeling constantly

under attack.

You realise that the days

no longer seem so dark.

Winter has departed

and summer is back

to warm up you heart.

Nothing

Could we just do nothing?

Would that be okay with you?

Just exist

and breathe together

under the watching moon.

Two souls in tune,

listening to the wind

croon its songs.

Could we just be one?

Living in the moments spent

not the big reveals,

nor storylines full of drama

and painful ordeals.

Just witnesses to the way

the seconds tick

slowly away mid gaze.

Could we just be?

Would you be able

to wear that suit

for just a day?

No big stories to pursue,

no mountains to climb.

Just me and you

sitting like a fine

drift of snow,

sifting the day into

moments of joy

to behold

when our hearts

and minds

take hold.

Would nothing be ok?

We could just collapse

into the arms of the day,

no tasks,

just remove our masks

and lay watching

the air circulate its stories of love,

whilst we hold each other tightly there,

breathing each other's air.

Not a care. Just a day where

we can enjoy us.

Would that be enough?

Would nothing fill your heart

as much as it does mine?

Where nothing is full

of a feeling so divine,

a feeling where

two hearts can just sit and shine.

Perfectly aligned, no worry about time,

no deadlines, no complexities.

Just wrap ourselves

in blankets of love

and stare into each other's minds.

Would that suit you fine?

Would you accept this invitation of mine?

Let's spend a moment

just ignoring the passing of time.
