After the long goodbye
the horrible heartache
starts to take hold.
Blood runs cold.
The chill burns your skin.
Is there anything left
where your still heart
once lived?
You feel bereft. Too many tears shed.
Life keeps tugging at the threads
like a scarf worn thin,
no longer keeping you warm
against the ice within.
It's easier to go back
for more
when they pick up
the phone and call.
You fall back into a cycle
where hurt is the outcome
of every wheelspin.
You sink into the emotions
that are still breathing,
still crashing
like waves upon an ocean.
Your will starts to give in
and you give out again.
After the long goodbye
all you can do is ask why?
You question if you were
right to call it off,
if it was ever enough?
If it was ever really love?
You start to doubt,
watching as your
sense walks out.
You wonder aloud
will this last forever,
the pain inside
that clouds your senses.
The part of your life
that has been severed.
Will the wounds heal over time?
Meals for one.
Long hours searching
for some sun,
when all that walks along
is the darkness
that clings to your bones.
Cinema dates alone,
places avoided
for the taste of tears
brings back
memories of years
spent with your heart
sat in arrears
and the account
has been closed.
But you realise that life
is slowly seeping back,
you enjoy
your own company,
and not feeling constantly
under attack.
You realise that the days
no longer seem so dark.
Winter has departed
and summer is back
to warm up you heart.
