It’s a grand undertaking,
reaping the souls of the dead,
swinging your scythe over head
and bringing it down in one fluid motion.
Takes years of practice and devotion
to transport souls across the great cosmic ocean.
You have to try to not get attached,
when souls need to be dispatched
they don't always take it in their stride,
because when you take them to the other side
all they have is memories of the life they tried to survive.
You need empathy and sympathy
to show them the universe's great symphony.
You have to work hard
in a job that offers little reward.
Not many people congratulate you
on the work that you do
and the pay is minuscule.
Someone must be making a killing
at the expense of all of us worker ghouls.
You need dedication
to take the dead to the next location.
The execution needs to be precise,
you can’t cut corners, or try twice.
It's a real sacrifice,
the hours are demanding,
as are the bosses.
Always commanding
us to cut our losses.
You need your head testing
if you want a job
leading the dead
to their final place of resting.
