Bravery is feeling
every urge to run,
every nerve spun and spun
until your just a tangled bundle
with just some strands undone,
yet you stand your ground,
and smile,
knowing that hurt
can come in a second
but truth lasts a lifetime
and it holds so much more honour
in that span than a spun tale of lies
which can only ever unravel
as time swiftly flies.
Bravery isn’t about having a loud voice.
He who softly speaks his secrets
can hold so much more
in just the merest hint of a whisper.
And though it can sometimes
feel like you are tied to the tracks,
train oncoming,
brain awaiting the moment
that the static hiss of nothingness
takes over. Nobody
can take your power,
for it is held inside every heartbeat,
every word you let slide
gently from your bruised lips.
Bravery is facing the fear head on
and knowing that it can never win
because you have so much more
courage stored within than a sun
has atoms that can ever become light.
It may feel like fight or flight.
You may feel like you are
on the wrong end of a gun.
But know this,
there is no right end of a gun.
Once you raise your eyes to the sights
the enemy as already won.
So, use your smile to disarm
and use your calm
to be the eye to a storm.
Bravery was forced upon me
by the brutality of life.
I tried to flee and hide,
I tried to run from the light,
I tried to blot it out like
ink drops of night
over a lined notepad,
to make some sense
of the dread I held inside.
But instead, I sensed
something good.
In the darkest woods
I found the trees
and I saw
sprayed on the bark
a note from the heart,
written in my own blood.
A message that said
you are enough,
now keep on
walking the path
and embrace
the earths love.
