Seeing a smile
forming
on your lips
lightens
the day
more than the sun
in the sky
or the flowers
that sway
on the roadside
along the way.
Your eyes
shine
like stars
twinkling
across the
darkest night.
The smile pulls me in
like the moon luring
the tides closer
as they beckon
the seaside towns
to swim.
And I’m drowning.
My heart is
dragging me down
like a lead weight
that I’m tied to.
I feel the current
rushing through
every nerve,
and I want to swim.
Oh, so much
I want to swim.
But I feel I don’t deserve
the happiness
that you would serve,
so, I just swerve
the hope as it flies
headfirst
towards me,
and I dive deeper
into this sea
of inadequacy
Cast me
a moonbeam
to cling on to,
a ray of hope
to swing on
through these
washed out thoughts
that cloud my days
with thoughts of you.
I want to see your smile grow
every day.
I want to see
the stars streak
across your eyes,
the glow
in your cheeks
as your lips
start to rise.
That magic smile.
I want to see it
when I open my eyes.
I want it to
be the last
I see
when the
daylight dies.
