These run-down streets
crumble under my feet,
as I wander under the moonlight.
Eyes darting as fast as thunder
to survey the scene.
I sway to the sounds
my phone plays to me.
I waltz beneath the shoe
hanging from the telephone line,
a dealer somewhere
taking away people’s minds,
but mine is already
somewhere across the milky way.
dreaming of being with you
on a happy summer day.
Deserted, boarded up shopfronts
greet my eyes as I walk.
A slammed door cracks against
its worn-down wooden frame
like a shotgun blast
and the night erupts into shouts of
blame
as broken love
walks from the flats above.
A feeding rat runs into the night,
scared of the sound,
as the shamed, cheating rat
doubles down
on his own mindless tirade.
But I’m oblivious to all of that.
As my sounds are drifting me
somewhere that the skies are pretty
and we can dance in a crystal city
with love forever written in elegant poetry.
A stray coat sits underneath a stray cat,
a moment of forgetfulness
or a deeper story
lost to times infinite clock.
The cat shuffles off.
Bounding to the safety
of the fence above me.
Eyes, yellow, glaring down
to see if I am friend or foe,
predator or prey,
or that so mysterious beast,
the one that feeds the coat with treats.
I carry on through the mazy streets.
The sound invigorating me,
every drop of drizzle singing to me.
And I drift off to that place where you and me
hold our hands tight
and glance into our storied eyes
seeing the starry night staring back
and we kiss
with the passion of a stormy sky.
