I saw the first rip in the midnight sky,
a tear in the fabric of spacetime.
I heard it strip the atoms apart.
Light. So extreme. Blinding white
like a newborn sun
had found our planet
and decided we needed
a second one that shone
twice as bright.
I found myself shaking. Frightened
as the first waves poured through.
Metallic ships glistening, shiny and new
as big as skyscrapers ripping into
our peaceful view.
There was no warning.
No message on the air.
No universal Tannoy
announcing that they were here.
They just appeared.
Why, I wondered to myself,
did we think it would be any different?
as if they would announce their arrival.
Letting us know
of our forthcoming annihilation,
an execution without trial.
Just the smoking ashes of devastation.
The apocalypse didn’t get a tv deal
we just watched live, in denial.
This was no time for fear.
Fear had been and gone
now all that was left was the absence.
The absence of hope
as I watched the ships all piling on.
Their laser beams cutting into the earth,
like a blade though a lemon.
I felt the slurp of the earth,
gurgling its final goodbyes.
And I wanted to cry,
but my tears were too scared
to come to my eyes.
Too frightened that if they were seen
they would be instantly vapourised.
The ground tore in two
like a loaf of bread
ready to be shared
to keep an army fed.
Ready to be consumed
by the hungry few
that orchestrated
this banquet of you.
The rivers bled.
Screaming,
as they evaporated away.
The seas boiled in rage
until ghosts of waves and sandy remains
was all that was left in their place.
And still they came.
The armies of the unknown.
The enemy we didn’t know.
Had they been watching our home?
Ready to invade whilst we were alone.
Well, they are here now, and I’m afraid.
I’m afraid it’s too late to atone.
They have taken our world,
and all hope is gone.
