Queen of hearts

We are all just searching

for that lost

slice of happiness,

that moment of clarity,

when the mind focuses

and through the blurred outlines

an image becomes more defined.

The signs all align to say this road is the one.

The destination is on the horizon,

and your heart will run free.

The last play of the song.

The queen of hearts

was never wrong.

And she sings

to let us know that

our thoughts are never alone

on this long road to the place

we will call home.

I listen to her and I’m mesmerised.

She doesn’t see her own shine,

she doesn’t hear the lilting rhythm of time

singing through her lips, every breath a kiss.

For she is home.

She is hope

in a world still so ill-defined.

The queen of hearts

plays her cards

and the fool sits unaware

that she lays them out for him only.

For we are all searching,

looking for that

last slice of happiness.

That moment of levity,

a fleeting second of brevity

where we let go of the frailty

of our feelings, so brittle and weakening,

and levitate above it all

as we accept hope

to set up home in our hearts.

Where the song continues to play.

And in our hearts

we know the words better

than any that we have ever had to say,

for the words talk of love in spades,

that diamond light

of a star setting the sky ablaze.

And our minds club

these words together into a simple phrase.

Three words laid out for eternity.

Cards played.

We live our lives in the hands

of the queen of hearts.
