Into dreams

I pass house after red bricked house

sun setting in the distant sky,

a blanket of sullen light coating the ground

where the heat ravaged orange grass lies

ready to rest for the day.

The hours pass silently away,

minutes of their meetings,

lost in the shade.

Televisions glare

through window screens

the same actors,

replaying the same scenes,

the same programs seen

from the same worn-out seats,

feeding the same sad lines

in a time-looped repeat.

As we turn the corner.

lovers cuddle

on street-side seating

whilst a man staggers past eating

a kebab he bought to soak

the alcohol away.

He ought to be at home, he is thinking,

but the lights above the next bar

just keep on blinking.

Life continues.

I watch as it

goes to and fro,

but for me

it has stopped still.

I don’t know

what to do, but take this journey

to pass the hours away,

to let them finally find their peace

as their light fades away.

The park still thrives with

clumped together lives,

though only a sliver of sun

is still lighting the sky.

Past the house with construction gear

left out in all weathers,

It’s been there all year.

Never seen anyone working,

never a brick is placed,

the materials just keep building

until the house is hidden from trace.

And I embrace this nightly pilgrimage

to my temple of words,

where the life I see

inspires a raging fire in me

to put on paper

the thoughts that are circling

like a bird released from a cage

and into dreams I enter

with a final flick of my page.

I wish i knew (Chalk dust)

I wish I knew

what would paint

a smile upon your face

like the ones

playfully scrawled

on pathways

in rain faded

chalk dust.

I wish I could

understand

the pain

that you've endured,

help you to regain trust.

I would give my heart

if it would help yours

beat twice as much.

I wish I knew

the words to use

to show how much

you mean to me.

I’ve always been

good with words,

except for when

I have to open up

my heart for all to see.

I fear that the doubt will creep in,

the hurt I’ve felt

will begin to grow again

ripping apart my chest

and then

I’ll sit like those chalk dust faces,

being rained upon

by my own distress.

I wish I knew

how to comfort you

when times are troubled

and it feels the world

is crumbling around you.

I wish I knew.

But all I have are

the scraps of my own pain,

faded like dust on pavements

in pouring rain.

Pavements

I’ve walked across

over and over again.

I wish I knew how to show you

the moments I regained my belief,

so you too could be inspired.

The old torn out soles

that walked those miles

supporting blistered feet,

the holes through which

the rain would seep,

have left a soul

that is not too weak

to hold yours tight,

no matter what fear may appear

in the middle of the night.

You can't silence a thought

You can silence some,

you may paint us

with all the names under the sun.

You can burn our pages

but our thoughts will soar on.

Your threats ring on deaf ears.

Our feelings can’t be worn down

when through a veil of tears,

we see a war-torn town

and the missiles

that have our flags

drawn on.

We the hearts that still beat

for those that beat no more

won't fall for propaganda

or be dragged into another unlawful war.

We see through the lies

and if you look deep into our eyes

you will see a fire rages inside,

for we won't stand idly by

and watch genocide.

We sat silently for so long.

The same sad story

repeating over and over again.

On the wrong side of history.

We cry as they spill

lie after lie and the blood

of innocence fills

the war-torn streets.

Iraq Afghanistan,

Ireland, India,

South Africa,

countless more

we have sat for so long

on the wrong side of history

as our country tore apart families

in some far away war,

or supplied the weapons

that brought it all back to our doors.

No more.

You can silence the few

but the many, not so easy now.

Our voices are loud.

We won’t bow

to lies.

We out-shout your war-cries

with our words of peace.

All fighting must cease.

All hatred is a disease

and we are the pill that will make it ease,

not your weapons of ill conceit.

We won’t be deceived

or let these thoughts leave.

We won’t be scared by threats.

Our hearts are weeping red

and we won’t sit by silently

as you leave lands

bleeding and dead.
