Why am I a poet?
A question so often
asked, usually
with an undercurrent
of derision.
Couldn't you make
it as a 'proper' writer?
What use does poetry offer?
What rhymes with purple?
Then it all repeats
in an endless circle.
The extra smug will ask about
different rhyme schemes,
about meter and foot,
they will mention certain
dead poets a lot.
They will scoff when
you say your work
follows a few different paths.
They won't understand
there is soul to the craft.
I write poetry
because I lay
and watch the sky,
and I see countless
mysteries flying by,
I wonder and ponder
my days away,
Seeking answers
to the question why,
trying to decipher
its countless riddles
in a single delicate line.
I write poetry
because I sit
and I glance at the ground,
seeing the remarkable life rushing around,
bounding and running,
working and playing,
my mind asks questions,
and listens to the wind
for when answers blow in.
I write poetry
because when the clock strikes three
and I'm woken from a dream,
I see words floating
aimlessly across my ceiling,
the voice inside screams at me
to write it down, before it all fades
into night-time’s misty scenes.
I write poetry
because I think it's beautiful,
so much like
the world we witness day by day.
