If I close my eyes,
I'm a beach.
I'm the waves
and the gulls up high.
I'm the sky,
sunlight touching
the ground
like fingers
on a lovers thigh.
When I open them
I'm a busy waiting area.
A hospital bed, forgotten
on a side ward,
nothing feels complete.
No part of me
that doesn't ache.
and everything is coated
in waves of doom.
If I close my eyes
I'm dreams.
I'm moonlight teasing
the curtains. A gentle breeze
rustling them.
I'm a lover
walking towards
a castle of light,
where the queen
of time
sits awaiting
my sight.
If I open them
I'm alone again,
just bright lights
peering directly
at the thoughts
in my head...
Oh, please don't read
those thoughts, I scream.
I don't want you
to witness my dreams.
You may see the one that
walks across my beach
during moonlight
and you may realise
that she looks just like you.
So please don't read my thoughts
Not whilst I'm here
vulnerable
with nowhere to hide.
