With heavy heart
I say farewell.
I walk these streets,
knowing that my feet
will miss the kiss
of this old concrete,
the worn-down stones,
that I feel beneath.
The breath I take with me
filling my lungs
with this peaceful retreat.
The places to eat,
the smiles that great
the northern warmth
a different kind of heat.
I bid adieu
but know that
I love you,
a piece of your green
shrubbery still grows
within me.
Apart of your terrain
etched into my memory.
Your face is a picture I will see
whenever I close my eyes
and drift off to sleep.
A reminder of another world
where forever skies sit above
fields so vibrant and green.
I sit awaiting the train
to take me home
where the world has
different tones of grey
mixed into its rain,
altogether murkier
shades of colour,
coursing through its veins.
Another view without
the vivid dreamlike quality
and just a little less love
wandering the streets and lanes.
And I know
that it will feel like
a jigsaw, incomplete.
With pieces lost
along a different city street.
When part of me loves
that unique view,
when I feel a different skip
to my different heartbeat.
So, until next we do meet,
I’ll leave a piece of my heart
tied to this fountain-side seat
for you are a home from home,
a place I can feel like me.
