You can’t wake up the world
with sirens and alarms,
nor hug the earth
with nuclear arms.
You can’t dissolve hate
in a bucket of loathing.
There is no future
if the past means nothing.
is it woke to want good
instead of being asleep at the wheel
unable to navigate the flood.
You can’t teach today
if you forget
the lessons of yesterday,
and you can’t regret
the way the days end,
If all you did was lay
neglecting to see the light
watching the sun fade,
only waiting for the night.
To grow
we start off small.
To rise
we sometimes have to fall.
Building a wall
sometimes keeps the monsters in.
Rather than protecting
it makes us weak.
If we have thick skin
we sometimes lose all feeling,
it’s better to feel the tears tickling
than to let them drown us
slowly from within.
If we knew back then
what we know now,
would we have a clue
how to fix this before it eclipses
all the good.
Or would we just be
cycling around
the same circuit in time,
not changing gears,
nor taking any detours.
for fear of being lost in
the mocking applause
of a slow clap.
If the sun light burns our skin
then does the moonlight
give us a glow within? Is it showing?
Do you see the light
and know that it’s there
to help you see in the darkest nights.
Or do you just close your eyes and hope
that everything will be alright?
