Six rotations around the sun.
Whilst you may no longer be here in body
still your memory lives on
in the radio songs they play on rainy days.
I remember how you would
sing along. Badly.
But oh, how I'd gladly hear
those out of key songs again.
I'd let them drip feed my ears
like the finest honey,
but all we have are tears running.
Six cycles since that spring morning.
When hearts broke
like the sunshine cracking over
the dawning day.
Hearts broke without warning.
A piece of our hearts taken away
but still fragments of memory stay.
Your wise words, the knowledge you preserved,
the smile that sprung from your lips
like a flower from earth.
You showed me how to be me,
you never judged harshly,
you taught me. So much.
Six times around the sun
and it doesn't hurt any less.
The memories have created a nest
in our minds. All those special times.
We never had a lot,
but our hearts were full of love,
and that came from you,
now the taps will never stop.
You gave me a love of the written word.
All the books you had stored, I devoured them.
Tried to read every word,
even when my mind
wasn't quite ready
for the worlds they stirred.
Six whole years.
It seems like yesterday you were here.
Maybe this is because I always feel you near.
I always wished for you to see my shows,
to read my words, to be proud of who I became,
as you’d watch me bloom and grow.
A man who carries the family name,
And although I'm not a religious man,
I somehow know you are there
in spirit and soul.
Always watching over us,
and this builds up my courage to
learn to be better every step of the way,
One day I know we will
see each other again,
in the rustle of the trees,
the way a robin arrives,
the way the sunshine lands just right,
or in the twinkling stars
putting on a display at night.
