I've seen those
stone cold
wheels of time turn.
Achingly slow at first
but now they are greased,
they blur around.
Speeding though
whole years at a time.
I've never had
a good grasp of it,
the way it sifts
through fingertips,
like the wheels have ground it down.
All I'm left is sand
slipping to the ground.
I see the way the sun
swims across the air,
it used to be slow, now
it rips through vapour,
like scissors
streamlining through paper
like it isn't there.
I have always been unprepared
for the cycle, this miracle time
I've never known how to use it,
or who to spend it with.
I've always just stood by the side
watching others enjoy the tide,
late for my bus and missing my ride.
I've seen the moon,
in so many stages of transition
on its ever long mission
to make me dizzy.
It doesn't take a lot,
my head is fizzy
with bubbling thoughts,
so many uncorked bottles
rattling around,
if they all toppled as one
I'd surely drown.
I've watched those hands
spin from time to time
then around again
in a continuous cycle.
I've seen the numbers fade
before my eyes
as ticking years flick speedily by.
I've questioned
my place, my worth, my life,
and the answer never really came,
but now it sits in clear view
in a different picture frame.
It says stop watching the way time fades,
start creating stories it can never erase.
