Can we be
a lighthouse in a dream?
A guiding beam
through the silent screams
of those stormy seas.
Can we feed the sanctity of life
and let it walk free
without a label
or a disapproving glance?
Without ignorance
or racist chants.
Can we hold love in our hands
and fight for the beauty of these sands?
Not the hate that stains this island.
Can we be
the shooting stars
that grant wishes?
Instead of an island of
vicious manipulative voices
all raising a chorus
of hate at anyone
who want to embrace
the golden sands
of these shores.
Can we be welcoming?
Opening our arms
and our doors
instead of
ringing alarms
and spewing venom
on the floor.
Can we be
the moonlight
on a dark night?
Giving the ground a glow
so that travellers
never feel alone.
Let’s embrace our differences.
Expand our horizons,
whilst finding the similarities
that make us all human.
Let us dance to music
from other shores.
Delight on delicacies from distant stores.
Swim in stories from lives
that are not just
a mirror image of yours.
Can we think as humans
instead of island inhabitants?
Resist the lies
that the media advances
to keep us fighting.
Or are we so passionless
that we have forgotten to dance
when the sounds envelop us?
Have we become
such a fractured society
that we have lost
the purpose of humanity?
The beauty in the stories.
The magic in sharing
our histories.
Can we love
instead of
fighting a war
where there
are no enemies
at the door
just friends
there to create
new memories
to store?
