Timeworm

The clocks all stopped momentarily.

A second or two,

just a tick over the grand

hands of eternity.

Just a grain of sand

in the hourglass of our day.

Time froze like

an ice age of seconds.

Everyone stopped on their toes.

Heartbeats

ceased for a solo beat.

Blood stopped its flow

like a blockage had gotten into

the veins of the universe.

Then as quick as it stopped

it tocked again.

A blip, a glitch

in the skin of reality.

No one knew,

they just continued as before

oblivious to the hole

through which the darkness poured,

the torn universe stretched and warped.

Atomic clocks blinked alarms

but scientists ignored the sounds.

Just mixed signals,

misread past particles

on the tuning of the cogs of time.

Just a glitch.

Just a glitch.

That’s what they repeated,

a snagged thread of hope

in a world we knew little about.

They didn’t tell the masses,

kept it to the upper classes.

Everyone oblivious

to the second lost to the dark mist.

The conspiracy reddit didn’t combust.

The world carried on.

No-one mentioned the lost second again

but it changed everything.

The whole world was off axis,

the stars swung past us

a little faster than we could ever have known.

The moon was a fragment to the right,

just a stitch out of place in the night.

Tides swept twice as hard, rains fell upside down

but our memories were scrambled and fried

so, we carried on walking the streets of our towns.

Just a glitch.

Just a glitch.

Or was it?

Had the world short circuited?

The world froze for a second

but in that time

the sleep demons thrived,

infecting dreams until sleep was deprived.

The hive mind delivering their song in a hum.

The one who lives

in the galactic swirls

had come down to snack.

Now time was all out of whack.

Timelines diverged,

memories deleted

replaced with defective storylines

from a place and time

not here or anywhere near.

A mind worm eating through time

and we are the main course

just boiling away in the pan

oblivious to the heat gradually rising.
