Gatekeepers

Can we cease with the gatekeeping please?

Art, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder

So, stop insisting that your smeared lens

is the only way to see.

Beauty in art may sing like a choir

or it may hum a slow drone,

slightly out of tune.

but with something magical in the tones.

I've heard so many say,

"but it’s not poetry"

Or I don't like the artistry

that this painter displays.

I'm not keen on this singer’s song of choice.

It doesn't fit my tiny box

It doesnt tick the box that I've convinced

myself this art must consist of.

Art can be as delicate as a sapling

making its first forays into the sun,

or as big and bold as a mountainous tree

that's been around since long before we were born.

It's okay to dislike the work,

but do you have to be a jerk?

putting down the hours, the days

the weeks and years

all the searching through misty tears,

just trying to find the right way to portray

what it is that you are trying to convey.

Art can be like an ocean wave

and crash onto the scene

like that wave upon a beach

Or it can be more like a stream,

slowly finding its ways

into the winding cracks we leave.

Criticism is fair game,

ripping a person's heart out

to make you seem

like the only person

who understands art,

is not.

It's just bullying with a different name.

Advice is fair, to rip and tear is not the same.

Art doesn't have to be constrained by the past.

What came before is a guide,

but the way forward is vast.

Kindness isn't weak,

all you have to do is

think before you speak.

Would you like someone

to say these things to you?

Would it make you want to continue?

Without art we would be so much poorer

It's the currency of love,

of hurt and pain

Within it we hold the truth

our souls contain.
