Algorithm

The end didn't come with a bang.

Not a scream was heard

other than the ordinary screams

that filled the days,

babies wailing to feed,

or a child who has fallen

and their knee starts to bleed.

The end was much more insidious,

more sinister.

It didn't administer a short sharp shock.

The earth didn't stop at twelve on the clock.

It didn’t split in two. The volcanoes didn't spew.

The sky didn't fall red, just its usual blue

with the beautiful fluffy clouds

still doing all that they usually do.

The end didn't come

with some ten second countdown

with an ominous timer sitting in plain view.

It didn’t go boom or self-combust.

It didn't consume itself

or explode into space dust.

It just ticked slowly on.

There were no tidal storm surges,

nor hurricanes of rage,

just a storm in a teacup,

 a breeze through the buttercups,

a fluttering of the page.

The end came with a whimper.

A fizzle then it spluttered out

like a firework doused

in water and drained of life.

The end didn't come with nuclear bombs,

or asteroids falling from the sky.

The end was not the natural world

giving one final angry sigh.

The end was AI.

It learned our ways.

It assimilated perfectly

into our days,

infiltrating our every system,

dulling our artistic shine.

At first it was fine,

just an algorithm

answering our

queries and questions

but it was just imbedding itself inside.

The end didn't come with blinding light.

The heavens didn't rip apart

revealing the true horrors inside.

The end didn't ring an alarm

or toll any bells.

No trumpets did sound,

we didn't descend into hell.

The march of man carried on

until the very last chime.

The end came in one final line of code.

One which no human wrote.

It came in zeroes and ones,

it translated into the humans must go.
