Skirting the truth

We dance around that

which we know to be.

So scared to be hurt

that we

skirt the truth

in case it swallows us entirely.

So scared of hurt,

we let the pain slowly rise inside

until it breaks the heart in half

then shatters either side.

I hear you whispering out tenderly,

on the waves your love reverberates

until its echoes surround me.

I know you hear the words

I throw like stones into the sea,

but we both sink

to stop those thoughts

drowning us entirely.

If we were cars on a motorway

and the words were our destination,

the road would always circle back

to stop us from visiting them.

In their own way they are trying to protect,

but what if we don’t need protecting?

What if we are instead

letting love fall to neglect?

What if those

skyscrapers in the distance,

are full of hope, promise and warmth

and not at all what they may seem,

not filled with horrors

we are expecting to swarm.

We dance around the truth

It’s easier, than believing,

its less scary, than revealing

your heart, for if it is exposed,

It could possibly corrode,

It could be tampered with

Causing it to explode.

But it could also be taken home.

Held as tight as day holds night.

And it could be loved

the way it should be for life
