Love hearts

I have a pocket full of love hearts,

crumbled dusty shards

of old love that fell apart.

The messages no longer visible,

but they are etched to my brain,

like the lightning strike hit,

of a kiss in the pouring rain.

Those rose-tinted words,

that say we'll be together

until the end,

their sweetness masks a bitter taste

that stays in your mouth for days.

As the lies printed

become like blood on chalk,

just a turn of phrase, a wasted talk

that you shared instead

with all those other men

that you invited

to share your bed

way back when.

I have a box of chocolates,

sat in the dark recesses of my room.

Still wrapped in greased paper,

mould consumed, fur encased,

remind me of the way

you left me with a broken heart,

and a fragile mind,

when you picked my life apart,

scar by scar, you drove in words,

like nails hammered into the sands of time.

The faded card, coated in cobwebs,

still sits, looming over me,

like a record of your greatest hits.

The sun-kissed way you'd say

this love can never fly away,

your heart won't ever stray.

You talked of never being apart,

except for all those nights

when you were baiting another heart.

Leading them into your trap,

where if they rest their head for a nap

you will let the guillotine snap.

I still have the flowers,

beside me, like discarded hearts

left in a cemetery. Old and wilted,

musty scent stains fingers,

no sweet perfume lingers.

Just the scent of decay.

I hold them

like a badge of pride,

how I’m still smiling loud,

all the pain that you placed inside

slowly ebbing away.

Glitter dreams and youthful eyes

The swirl of lager fume highs.

Glitter dreams and youthful eyes.

Boys thinking they are men.

Tall guy sways in, a flurry of

white powder haze follows him.

Wavy hands through the fog

like a drowning victim

pleading to be saved.

Another round, aftershock taste

to wash it down.

Eyes tuned intently to the ground,

as if the floor will melt

with the intensity of the sound.

Saturn five flies overhead

on spiralling carpets of light,

as deelite fill our hearts

with grooving skies.

Dreams drifting beside

speaker-stack lighthouse glare.

Kisses unpacked

like a suitcase full of wishful air.

Thudding sounds meld

into the vibrant atmosphere,

as drink takes us

far, far away from here

in an escape to oblivion.

A journey

to the stars,

the time of our life,

with the girl from Mars.

Living without fear.

Stone roses fade

into an obscure b side,

Happy Mondays

take a stumbled stride,

day tripper wakes us up,

oasis sidle by.

Night blurs into view.

Vague shapes in the sea of faces

morphing through the waves in stages.

Capsized hearts drowning

in the flood of tears

and sticky floor residue,

another round pours in,

as we down a few.

We are too preoccupied

to see the waves,

her hands advance

through the dark, scattering

my thoughts to the wind.

Her lips exciting, my heart

exploring hidden parts

of this all-new world,

so enlightening.

The beat mesmerising.

A primal scream echoing,

captivated, elated.

Hearts traversing

under liquid lighting,

minds escaping somewhere

into that still early night.

Invincible, indestructible,

still so young, don't feel time’s

gravity crushing at all.

Lips tingle, tongues explore,

mingling across their own

exotic dance floors,

tied by flowing locks of jet-black night

and rhythmic beats played so tight.

These heart bounding

chains keeping us entertained,

until the final song fades out.

Then it's into the outside breeze.

moonlight our only clock.

Still not time to leave,

as we congregate,

a Sunday morning communion,

A choir of birds witness to the union.

The church of sound

and youthful exuberance.

Between floors

Can't shift this thought,

it's like a lift caught

between floors,

the passengers

banging the walls inside.

Reverberating the words

around my mind.

I sought answers,

but what if my questions

were wrong?

Was I longing for something

that could be wrong?

Was I barking up

the wrong tree all along?

Or did I just never share

the right words in my song?

I keep my thoughts

in a space, lodged deep

in my head,

like a nest in a tree

where my imagination

can find its bed,

then when it's ready

spread its wings

and fly, forever free.

Coming back to me anytime

it needs a place to spread.

But I still can't shake this feeling,

of unknowingly revealing

what was supposed

to stay hidden.

Thoughts that should

have stayed in the shadows of night,

have somehow found themselves

basking in the warming day light.

I wanted to feel,

but is feeling a good thing,

when the sting of pain

is oh so real?

When dejection follows

rejection after sharing

your affection.

Is feeling going to help

when all you feel inside

is deflated hope?

A broken heart tied together

with frayed rope.

Can't shift the thought,

That I should have

kept my mouth shut.

Stayed silently stood

in the shadows instead,

but if I didn’t share my heart

how would you know

how much it bled?

How it wanted to hear

every thought in your head.

If I kept my thoughts buried

How would you know

that every beat was there to add

a backing to your chorus.

It wanted you to know

that it was forever yours to own.
