Dreaming

I dreamt of you

last night.

I held you tight

as a dark tide

engulfed the land,

cursing man to hunt man,

raising hands to bring down

whoever they can.

I dreamt and you were struck.

Knocked down into the mud,

stuck,

I picked you up, and held on

whilst your tears touched

the muck and soil.

I realised

in that moment.

That blinked instance.

That our hearts

were forever tied,

like some invisible hands

had pulled the strings

and bound them tight.

I never want to

ever see you hurt

or down,

crying as your light is dulled.

I will shine a spotlight

upon your smile,

like the moon touching

the ground,

and we can raise a cheer, to toast

every happy tear that it brings.

I dreamt of you and it was

like my heart was yours

and yours was beating for mine.

The sound waves rippled over the lands

like a pebble dropped in a lake.

Every single moment - I breathed it in.

Every movement I watched in a double take,

swearing to capture it

in my writing every single day.

I pictured clouds amassing,

but I saw you flying through,

dispersing every darkened thought

like they were mere mirages

in a desert haze,

and still the waves of your heart raised

the rhythm of mine

until they were flying tandem

in a sky filled with silver lines.

I dreamt of you,

and I knew

in that split chasm of infinity

that you and I were

always meant to be

walking this pathway

in this fragment of future history,

like a figment of some fairytale

that has yet to be written.

And I still see the pigment

of your cheeks,

the blush as I held you,

and the look in your eyes

as you looked into mine

saying it was always true,

that you knew

the moment you met me,

the way I knew

the moment our paths

entwined in a memory,

that our pages were linked in

indelible ink and our stories

would line up until the books

sit collecting dust on a shelf in a library,

many years away in a sunburst sky.

Buried treasure

Love can sting

but it can be

a beautiful thing,

It doesn’t have to be

painful or untrue.

So, jump in the

deep end with me.

It doesn’t matter

if we can swim.

I will float with you.

Love can win

when it feels like only

hurt touches your skin,

when the dirt has been rubbed deep in

and no scrubbing will get it clean.

Lean on me and I will hold you tight.

Tracing the scars of your heart

and drawing on all the love it imparts

To paint you a message in the stars.

A message that speaks in glitter.

A swift reminder that

things can always get better.

Once you clear away

the debris and litter.

Pain can ensue

if the wrong person

passes through,

but it’s a lesson

and it doesn’t lessen

the love that had

its fledgling moments

in the sun.

It’s a treasure

don’t leave it buried

like worn old bones

beneath sun-bleached stones.

Dig it out,

hold it tight

and see

what treasure

the universe

bequeaths.

It may be messy and oblique

it may transpire

that it was never meant to be,

but the journey will

show you so much.

How wonderful you can be.

How joyous the birds can sing.

How the touch of spring buds on skin

can feel like a kiss left from the sun

after the rain has gone away.

The watchman smiles

The watchman smiles,

a fake smile,

just a bit too big

around the eyes.

These eyes that have seen

lies spread as truth,

narcissistic abuse ignored

and painted in different hues

to gaslight the view.

The watchman

slides his eyes

towards the ground.

The smile swoops

and becomes a frown.

Sick of this place.

Sick of this city.

Sick of always fighting

to end back on the same

street as before.

The dream thieves

always come back for more,

and the air tastes as shitty as it did

when the hateful rains poured.

The watchman reminisces.

Remembers a deceitful kiss

from days long distant to this.

When he thought only

of sunflowers and smiles.

When his heart would

walk for miles in the sunlit bliss.

A time so far away

in a place that he

doesn’t recognise today.

Now the flowers don’t sway,

the air thick with a mist of drizzle

as even the moon hides away.

The watchman walks

into the rain.

The pain in his heart

can’t be contained.

He has only ever tried

to bring love to this part of town,

but now the watchman feels broken down.

“Farewell”

he speaks to the empty air

as he wanders into the loneliness

to experience another nightmare.

But as he leaves, he whispers,

“I’ll be back, when the night needs me,

when the world is ready to fight

against the demons

that crawl on its back.”
