3am Thoughts

Paranoia creeps up on you,

It doesn't startle with a thud.

It's more insidious than that.

It sits inside the mind stirring

a vast vat of overflowing fears,

dripping over your thoughts

until they are all soaked through.

Trapped in a prison

but the walls don't protect.

The feelings they repel

make you feel more under attack.

The paranoia is settling in now,

It has made itself at home,

with a nice mug of cocoa.

Ready to chill you to your bones.

Darkness feeds the paranoia,

gives it room to breathe.

Room to think.

That noise.

Just the pipes in the bathroom?

Or my fate

walking with chains that clink.

A bang awakens me.

Was it in my dream or reality?

Hazy images flood my tired mind

A lone corpse,

its severed head lay beside.

I shake away the thoughts

that prey on my still sleepy brain

and explore,

no bodies on the floor.

For now, at least.

Though the thoughts

are raining for sure

and I feel my fear increase.

I investigate.

Every light on,

knowing that this

will probably seal my fate,

bring forth my doom.

cost me a fortune.

Receiving the electricity bill

will be my ruin.

Nothing unusual, I admit.

heartbeat raised a bit.

Sleep a thing I’ll have to forfeit.

The paranoia takes a while to subsist.

So, I sit. In my stupidly lit up home.

Like a Christmas light display,

now even the shadows cannot roam.

But at least there isn't a being hiding near.

I think as the hairs on my neck

prickle up with the strange tingle of fear.

I hear a thud.

this time it is right behind me

I turn.

The lights go out.

Cascading diamonds

She walks in night,

under light of the stars.

In the world of my dreams,

she hands me my heart.

Speaks in verse.

never too obvious.

Her words pierce

miles. The distant universe

of imagination and cognition.

Through the duration of sleep

she is there with me.

Holding my hand.

As we cross this unknown land,

where the grass is blue,

the sky is green

and the eyes always see a new view.

I don't recognize her face.

Not someone I can place.

But I feel I've known her

a lifetime or two.

She is always there,

the girl with pixie cut hair

and she always smiles when I do.

In dreams I know I'll see her again,

red hair waving across her head.

Her eyes look so sweet,

They softly gaze

into the world to come.

The wonder and amazement

of this world we face.

She comforts

with her soft delicate hand,

placed so gently on top of mine.

We walk through the forest,

trees bigger than mountains.

Stars explode in the sky.

Cascading diamonds.

Spinning through the midnight blues,

pinks and purples,

the nightmarish reds of this rainbow stew.

Yellows and greens

peeking menacingly through

the golden glow,

of this world of dreams

we crossed into.

But nothing scares me much,

nothing terrifies this heart

because beside me walks the girl

with whom I’ve walked all of my life.

The mysterious one

that comes when the sun is gone.

Always listens to my words,

always talks when I'm lonely.

She knows when I'm wanting home

or when adventure is what I hunger.

In the swirling, shifting landscape

where steel buildings rise in the sky,

pointing to the ground below

and seas of rainbow serenity flow

bathing the spirit that floats slowly through.

I walk with her

and talk about the future.

The past.

all the lost moments fall apart

and I'm here in a timeless place.

Her eyes. my only escape.

So, through the void I climb

and I find myself. whole again.

The spell she casts to heal me.

Trimmings

We amble down

whirling conveyor belt streets,

between shiny glamourous shop fronts.

This factory town

promising all new consumer treats.

Join the herd,

shuffling towards the shopping centre.

No time to enter

the little family shops,

only the big chains will serve us gruel

instead of slops.

Attracted to the lights,

consumer addicts

catch sight

of new highs.

Slow lane traffic,

the grindstone roads,

grinding us down to the bone,

but onwards we must go,

headfirst into the hungry crowds below.

Into the churning machinery

that makes this city flow.

Christmas is coming

and our bags are not yet

slowing us down

Not sinking our bank accounts

until we drown.

We must spend more.

Don't want the neighbours

to think we are poor,

even if we are repaying for years.

Let's get some glowing lights to cover the house.

Watch our electricity meter

though the flowing tears.

Christmas crowds huddle

to keep warm,

they must keep marching.

Between shop front and

identical shop front.

Need the latest iPhone,

the shiniest bling,

another new toy

to take the place

of last year's plaything.

It's not Christmas

without all of the trimmings.

They shout,

waving their money about.

But quickly put it safely back in pocket

as they speed up

and walk past

the tear-stained cardboard sign.

Shops promising Christmas delights,

under sparkling fairy lights.

Yet it’s the same tat on display,

just marked up in price,

some fake snow spray

and annoying jingling songs

playing all day.
