Winter of the heart

In this winter of my heart,

the snow falls slowly over

the barely thumping vessel.

It starts, then stops again,

palpitations of pain

instead of heartbeats

of hope.

Frigid icicles

dangle from

frozen rainbows,

as the snow globe shakes up

a blizzard. The heart raises

just a beat,

but enough

to add a little heat

to thaw

the strands of ice

that run deep

through its core.

In this frozen world of love,

a flicker,

as the heart grows bigger.

Renourished, it emerges

with renewed vigour.

No longer shackled

to ice chain cell.

No longer living in

snow covered shell.

The heart pounds, loud

enough to shatter the ice.

To sound a vibration

that cracks the glassy sheen

that cloaks the nation.

The walls of hurt start to collapse.

The sound of cracking

shattering strands

heard all over

the thawing reborn lands.

Moon-shaped bookmark

I keep a moon-shaped bookmark

to part the pages of my life, to mark

the sections I want to revisit.

The tales of happiness and love,

the moments that smiles shined

from the sky above, moonlight fingers

stroking my hair, the wind swept

pages breathing life into my lungs.

I use my moon-shaped bookmark,

to see where I am

at the end of a day,

to light new paths

I may want to embark,

to part seas that may

block the way.

My moon-shaped guide

to a life I choose to live.

My moon-shaped bookmark

keeps the good

and bad days apart,

It divides my days

into light and dark,

into heart and hurt.

It starts my night

with a kiss of love,

it ends with light

streaming down from the sun.

When sleep is distant

and relaxing is a struggle,

when my mind won't quieten

from the noise

of thoughts that rustle,

I read until my eyes

start to droop,

the bookmark of the moon

lighting the pages, before it sees my eyes

and dims to say,

'Go to sleep call it a day.'

Night drive

We could drive all night

just to find the merest hint

of beautiful moonlight

when all the time

it was left behind

in the place we fled.

We don't need to outrun

the dread,

it is already deep

inside our own heads.

We could drive

all night

trying to reach

our place in time.

When our place

was always just behind,

left in the room we vacated.

To begin this journey into the unknown,

mixed up thoughts left uncoordinated.

We could drive all night

to find an escape hatch

from this internal fight.

When all along, together

we had the world in our hands,

in our minds, In our little place

we had all we ever needed to find

In our hearts. Inside

We could drive forever

searching, seeking some refuge

from the increasingly stormy weather,

when behind, there was already

a roof.

A place our hearts could find truth

and could hold tightly

sheltering together.

We could drive all night

but I need to know,

am I really the one you want

or just a fanciful flight

away from the life

you've grown to despise.
