We are taught
that the devil dwells
down in the depths,
of some fiery hell,
but I know I've seen
his face smiling.
When I've been
walking at night,
at a crossroads
in my life,
I’ve heard him
speaking from the shadows
just out of sight.
It's in the acrid scent
of acid that pumps through
some men’s veins.
The scent that the devil
is around again.
From time to time
I’ve seen his grimace
from the tv of mine.
You can see it
in the lips spread across
teeth that are too big.
You can sense it in the air
when it gets the sulphuric tang
of electricity burning
through the atmosphere.
It's in the bolts of lightning
that strike down with fear,
or the missiles that fall
when the warlords start to call.
Preachers speak of heat rising,
burning you to a crisp,
teaching us, with a wicked lisp
to follow them like sheep,
or is it more like lemmings
ready to leap?
We are taught that good and bad
are external sources,
but from what I've seen
it's us that use them
as a set of resources.
We bleed the lands dry,
we steal another man's life,
we take over distant lands
to create a retirement fund
that we won't ever be able to use.
We set fire to the fuse,
whilst looking away
when tears are cried,
babies die, houses are torn
down in rocket fire.
Our hands soaked in their blood,
then we have the nerve to
speak of the other
as if they are the evil
and we are the good.
We are told to believe that good and evil
are ready to do battle.
That the angels have our backs,
as long as we practice what they preach,
if not then it's a heatwave
beyond our wildest beliefs.
As the skin begins to peel
when the itchy heat gets in deep,
but from what I've witnessed
evil and good live amongst us,
in what we do and say.
In the demonic way
we ravage another man's
countryside. Why?
Because we can. Who will stop
the march of the unkindly ones?
Is this part of some grand divine plan?
Or just that the devil truly lives
somewhere deep in the hearts of man.
