New book smell

A new book smells of hope,

all the tales it could evoke,

the emotions they may provoke.

It sings of lands

where the sun swings

through the air

in a playful dance

and the moon that joins in

to put on a majestic performance.

A delicate scent of fallen leaves

brings you to your knees

when the pages open in the breeze.

A new book

holds its promise

in bound covers.

It could bring memories

of that summer

where your heart

soared through the sky,

or the winter

that tears wouldn't stop

falling from tired eyes.

It holds secrets inside.

Messages told to unknowing lovers,

that hide themselves

through inconspicuous lines,

to be found

by only the right pair

of eyes.

A new book speaks in tones

that reach inside your skin

and sink into your bones,

nourishing them.

Sharing stories

that give your heart

a home from home.

The words are the building blocks

of a whole new world,

just for you to connect

and build

however you want

the lands to unfurl.

A new book smells

of cinnamon and marzipan,

chocolate dusting

on a sweetened roll

filled with

strawberry jam.

It can spark memories

that haven't been stirred

in half a lifetime.

It can hurt from time to time,

but the words will rebuild the walls

before you reach the final line.

I never knew love

I never thought love could be

like a walking death, a waking nightmare

of unending despair. Undoing everything

I've ever done. Untying the knot

on my sanity threads.

I never thought it could

weave nasty visions in my head,

make me afraid to sleep in bed,

afraid to leave my room, afraid to breathe.

In dread of things she said,

knocking me down

to become just a pen,

ink leaking upon the page.

I never thought love

could be eternal agony.

I always dreamed in colour,

like a rainbow symphony

playing through my head,

but that sound became a funeral dirge

as my vision was left just grey and faded.

It was supposed to be summer everyday.

That's what you would say,

that the destination was worth the hardship,

but capsized thoughts

remember days your mast slipped.

I never thought love

could leave me

questioning who I was,

like an outsider

watching myself from above,

wondering why he doesn’t run.

Why not leave?

You’re struggling to breathe,

get some air before you

fall to your knees.

I never knew love,

not with you.

I've seen through

the other side

of the

shattered mirror now,

I realise I'm who I need to be.

I know the love that lives inside me

isn't diseased, it's just fragile

from being force-fed

meals laced with tears.

That poison can't knock me out,

not now, I've become immune.

The forest of doubt

you planted within me,

I've cut it down,

and now I can truly see.

Daffodils

Feeling the sunlight starting to crawl

from its hibernation, after its winter withdrawal,

spring sneaks in through the still chilly morn.

Daffodils open their petals slowly,

stretching to the sun with a yawn

as dawn brushes

the stray remnants of night

under the horizon carpet.

Out of sight, out of mind.

She sings to herself with glee,

merrily dancing in the breeze.

Today we can finally be free.

No more icy chills,

now is the time for rebirth.

The sniffles won't have the nerve

to pick a fight with me she smiles.

The newborn lambs will be

bounding along soon,

little fluffy clouds

running across

the earth's grassy lawns.

It will be so idyllic just you see,

she says to her shadow,

hiding her sadness behind the mask

she uses to cover her face.

It used to be so busy,

she thinks

reminiscing of past days.

Human children would play,

the sound of laughter would fill the air,

inevitably followed by an ice cream van,

luring the young over with a little ditty,

to purchase their wares.

It used to be so busy...

Teardrop slips from her tear ducts,

down her cheek, to the mask she wears

to clean the air enough to breath.

It used to be so busy,

before those humans

dropped those giant mushrooming clouds,

ripping apart the sky with sounds so loud,

before the marching feet

slowly stopped marching

and fell to meet the earth,

scorched and burnt.

But now at least nature has returned,

she mumbles to herself, yearning

for something that will never be reborn.
