Listen

Listen to the car crash symphony,

a heart-breaking melody of melancholy

inside my head.

No sympathy.

Just cataclysmic crashing cymbals and dread.

When you can’t see a way forward just

satanic symbols leading you astray,

Betrayal and pain follow

in every whispered word they say.

The pathway behind swallowed up.

There is no silver lining

to life's brittle China cup.

Listen to the sound

of a world crashing all around

like waves of destruction,

towers being pulled down,

replaced by statues

everything you despised.

Statues of lies.

Built up in front of your eyes.

High Rise, they pierce the sky

until tears of blood are cried.

Listen to my own internal monologue

Like a travelog,

taking me to distant torture spots.

A life-sized cardboard cut-out image,

just there to look like I'm there,

when I'm in another location

and they are painfully pulling out my nasal hair.

One by one. With tweezers.

Demons with angelic features.

Listen to the silence

as my mind finally collapses.

Just the sound of static

buzzing quietly through

burnt out synapses.

As I fall into a dark pit.

To recharge for a bit.

Before recommencing the climb.

The climb to find my place in life.

To push aside this noise and strife.

To feel I have a place to belong.

It will take some time.

Who knows how long?

Knocking

I want to knock

on the door

to your heart.

Awaken it from its slumber,

but I wonder.

do I have the right house number?

If I knock loudly

would the fear that I'm feeling

confound the sounds with those

of my own heart pounding?

I want to rap a secret message,

tapping out a beat that when heard

would make you know

that my heart isn't blurred,

just a little scared.

But if the feeling isn't shared

then will blushes be spared?

I stand in the cold,

harsh wind blowing through.

Should I ask?

Should I open my heart to you?

And would yours open for me?

I stand aimlessly.

Just feeling the cold embrace

of fear teasing and taunting.

If I knock in morse code,

without speaking aloud,

would the words still have impact?

I doubt myself.

If you saw the fear in my eyes,

the hurt of past lives

the battles I fight.

Would you open the door

and extend an invite?

I put my hands

back into my pockets

and walk away.

Heart on my sleeve

Heart on my sleeve,

was stuck deep in my throat,

making me choke.

Words wouldn't pass,

they just made me gasp,

grasping for air.

made me feel lightheaded and weak.

Now it's on my sleeve.

Leaving me free to speak.

I etch my words onto that heart,

every emotion taken

and burned

into every beating part.

The hurt.

that tears a hole in the centre,

I fasten back together

with the happiness

I find in the moments I remember.

Sticking plasters and adhesive tape,

bandages hold it all in shape.

Frayed strands of string,

sewn deep so they ends don't tether

to keep the pieces held firmly together.

Afraid it may fail to start.

if it tries to beat too strongly

this stitched up heart.

For far too long.

I lost my way.

So now I hang a compass

from my heart,

always points my direction home

when I'm lost, alone

or my world is falling apart.

I take words

like strength, resolve.

and I force them back in.

Turning them around my mouth.

Until I can feel every brittle edge.

Until each letter shard

is mixed with my blood.

They become my food.

My saviour in this world of hunger.

I take feelings of hurt and put them

where they belong.

In a prison of my own creation,

Incarcerated with the hate and anger

that grows like a cancer.

I visit them sometimes,

to give introspection.

and I will continue

until they have withered

into shadows of their former selves

and faded from view.
