Lights flash
through the inky black
of this quiet night.
As the engine hums, rumbling along.
Alone in his seat he sits,
contemplating the darkness, he could
almost grip within his mitts.
The engines slow, as a station
crawls into view.
A woman sits, tapping at her phone.
Oblivious to the darkness
that is almost consuming her.
A tear drops like a stone.
On the platform, waiting
for the last train to call.
Waiting, the endless night,
as shadows fall.
Darkness enshrouds
Even the fluorescent lights
are struggling against
the misty clouds.
She stands,
looking longingly
at the departure board,
but that is a train
she shouldn't step aboard.
The sadness will pass
when the sunlight falls.
When darkness
no longer enshrouds,
no longer clouds your thoughts.
When the fluorescent lights
have been turned off
and the glowing ball in the sky
lights the day,
and scares the darkness away.
