Old town centre,
brick stained,
by years of rain.
Paving stones
wearing away.
Shutters pulled.
Empty storefronts.
Yet still the people
trample forwards,
from nowhere
marching towards
nothing, ever onwards.
Just a steady stream
passing through
brick riverbanks.
Couples, families,
solo adventurers,
all take their place,
in this race from
obscurity to oblivion.
A lovestruck couple stops,
beside the stonework pavilion.
A kiss is shared. Blushes flare
like the burning heart
of a neutron star.
Defensive positions
lowered. Dreams of distant
wedding bell chimes.
They tread onward.
No idea how far,
Ever moving forwards,
like the steady flow of time.
To let signs sigh
beside strained eyes
of tired travellers,
time travellers,
watching
as the past unravels.
They keep marching onwards.
From the remote thudding hope
towards distant landscapes,
foretold in ancient horoscopes.
Ever onwards.
Child takes the hand of their mother
as they wander
through the day together.
Smiles shared
as they stride onwards
through histories turned pages,
like the ever moving
passing of ages.
