I thought it had stopped,
the unnerving grind
inside my mind,
the terrifying hum,
those rumbled internal echoes
of screams that never come.
I thought it was done.
Gone. Never to return.
I thought I was free
to listen to the tweeting birds,
without that infernal sound
making my head squirm.
I thought it had ceased.
The insect sound
of some long forgotten
ancient beast,
the buzz of a million bees
drilling into my cranium.
I thought I was free
to listen to the breeze
but now the hum is back
and I'm down on my knees.
I thought it had stopped
like the hands on my clock
once they hit the top.
I thought it long gone.
For so long the bells hadn't rung.
I didn't expect to hear the hum.
I thought that terrifying nightmare
had been and gone,
seen me weep and said, so long.
How wrong I was.
The hum was back
like a slow-release curse.
The hum was back
and it was ten times worse.
