Mistakes and misread signs,
led down darkened lanes,
a dead end with no hope to find.
In the wispy dreams that visit
I see so much joy and glee,
inspiring me to join the party.
but in reality, only bleak
empty landscapes surround me.
Misery wears itself like a coat
with many holes, hiding the skin,
covering the cracks
that peer out from within,
but still letting the cold get in,
rain still soaking
the shredded garments beneath.
Sometimes the pathway highlighted
by a thousand streetlights will lead you
to feel down and out.
It lies, proclaiming better things sit
just over the hill rise, but as you climb,
grit embedded in the palms of your hands,
you realise that this hill just hides
a million more, each more treacherous
than the one before.
Sometimes it's better
to stick to the darkness.
Follow the path you know
like the back of your hand.
Unplanned events will come,
some making the journey slow,
others showing you the kindness
that hides in this darkened land.
I wear my hope, like a hat,
brimming with moments that
enlighten the mind.
I don't let the coat of misery
drag me down, or weigh too heavily
over these shoulders that have already
carried that misery for such a long time.
Now it's time to seek the sunshine,
which always follows
the darkest night
The magic light,
which makes
the world feel alright.
