I see great sadness
in the deep wells of your eyes
like you have cried floods, internal,
biblical in size.
I see the scars,
where mortar shells of misery
have crashed into your life.
I see a sea of hurt
and under the surface
I see shipwrecked hearts.
I see holes where the stars should sit,
and emptiness
where the sun would once fit.
I see the strain of smiling
becoming too much, trying
to untie the tangled knots in your mind.
A mind that is often unkind.
I see the feint lines
where sharp cuts have been made,
I've seen the people you have let fade
because facing people becomes a drain.
The mirror looks back,
but only shows so much.
Doesn't reflect
the way you are learning to self-love.
It hides the way you still see
so much colour in the grey.
It can mask you
to make you look okay,
or it can make people
take one look and walk away.
The mirror only shows
what you want to see.
Focus on positivity.
See the beauty in every
battle won, see the scars
as a victory.
See the smiles still
cracking through,
yes, they are tough,
but your smile beams from you.
