Aaaarrrrrggghhh, I scream
to lingering dreams in the dark.
I agonise over every vocalised
screech, as it pushes past my lungs,
moving my heart apart. I try to grab it
but it’s out of my reach. I try to catch it.
The sound just leaks between fingers.
Now it knows I'm here.
It knows I'm awake, I'm aware
and I'm afraid.
The perfect storm.
It senses my fear,
and snarls to the air.
Sniffing to find its target. I need to be calm,
but that's easier said than done,
when a giant beast is standing in your room.
Less than a foot away from you,
drool dripping from glinting teeth,
stained red from previous feasts.
I try to breath, quietly.
But the breath is somewhere
deep inside me,
too scared to come out,
with the being that prowls about.
My lungs spasm, my throat tickles.
I'm ready to explode, tears trickle.
I'm bright red, a neon light in this dark room,
A shining beacon like landing lights,
with an arrow over my head.
Saying here be food.
And just as the twitch
in my throat becomes a rumble,
the beast turns and flees,
through the door he stumbles.
For the sunlight is creeping in
through the window,
and I'm left there
praying on my knees.
