Can you feel it?
Footsteps skulking beside you,
like a sorrowful shadow
that grabs hold of your skin
like a fear tattoo.
Don't acknowledge it,
don't let it breathe,
just walk.
Keep on doing you.
Give it attention
and it can destroy
all you know is true.
Pulling at your strings
It controls you,
making you feel insane.
A puppeteer.
You, just waving your arms in despair,
a windmill in a hurricane.
Don't acknowledge
that it has you in its grips.
Don't let slip
that fear is what is quivering your lip.
Don't let it smell
the scent of terror within.
Don't admit
that it has you running again.
It's always there,
always somewhere
close behind,
It keeps its distance at times,
letting you feel fine,
A false sense of security,
to bind you in its thin strand of twine.
But listen and you will hear
footsteps lurching somewhere near,
You will glimpse shapes
in the corners of your eyes.
Don't let on that you have him spied,
that you see him. Just try to hide
but don't admit you are scared,
or he will take what is left of your life.
