No-one plans to take the road
to rock bottom.
Downfall isn't a destination
you set your heart upon.
You take a winding pathway,
making all of the wrong turns
and just sort of end there.
Where there is? No-one can say.
It just seems to appear one day.
It's like any small town,
except the shops are all crumbled,
like a war-torn battleground.
You look around,
but the only faces you see
are weeping and staring down.
The flora is wilted,
no animals walk here.
The birds fly above until they
reach the invisible border,
then circle back away.
The journey here can
take countless years,
or it can be just a day.
You will be on a bus, or a train,
then wake in a deserted station,
in pouring rain. Unaware
of how, or why, you got here,
or how to leave again.
Rock bottom doesn't have to be
your forever home.
It isn't somewhere you want
to lay foundation stones..
You can escape
when you need.
You just have to find meaning,
keep believing, search within,
and some day
it will present a way free.
A golden ticket for a train
that leaves every now and then.
Back to normal reality,
away from this dead-end drain.
