Things are not all binary.
A spectrum so vast
yet our view so tiny.
Zeroes and ones
are just mimicry
of life, as it builds itself
from many complexities.
I am not a digit,
not a zero, but one man
born in an analogue world.
I take everyone
and welcome them to
share my heart and soul.
Break bread of courage
to get your stories heard.
Things are not as simple as
one and one equals two,
there are many more differing
equations that create
this world we view.
So put down your prejudices
and pick up your plate,
share the food you baked,
and listen to stories
that are layered
like a cake of truth.
We are all one,
but some are seen as wrong.
Who gives the right
to choose what makes us human?
Who gives the right
to belittle anyone you deem
below you?
Who made you the voice
the one we should listen to?
When so many more voices
are singing a different tune.
I take everyone as they come,
colour, race, religion,
gender, sexuality,
it doesn't matter to me,
as long as your heart
beats in the rhythm of equality,
to the waves of the sea.
I'd rather we just share our histories,
point out the inconsistency,
highlight the atrocities,
emphasise the beauty,
and wade through the flaws.
We are not
the chosen.
We are not rulers.
In fact,
we are very rarely good.
Our stories are dripping
with innocent blood.
We dredged the oceans
of our own depravity.
Held prisoners in captivity.
Enslaved those deemed only fit
to be worked to the bone.
We stole homes. We stole histories,
for this we will always owe,
and our next payment is due.
Yet we have never learnt.
How history turns back on itself,
Repeating the hurt,
repeating the same
tired stories.
As we speak,
the gears of hate
slowly turn again,
and the mirror will repeatedly,
show the shame of the white man.
