Under the microscope
of social media,
peer pressure,
always aiming for better
to try to replicate the way
others seem to bloom,
living in sunlight
whilst you sit wilting
in the shade.
It would be so easy to wither away
if any of this was real,
but the mask of social media,
paints only the days that are ideal,
only the sunsets that seem unreal.
Only the best meals,
only the moments carefully plucked
from photograph reels,
where the smile
is just a touch more real.
You never see the days
where it rains tears of dismay,
washing the makeup down your face,
or those moments where everything got stuck
like tyres in the mud,
your mind a puddle of thoughts,
none of them good.
When your mood has soured
and you feel disempowered,
when clouds circle
and the sky rumbles
as you find yourself lost
in a sea of foggy crowds,
trying at all costs
to just keep your head afloat,
and stop the intrusive thoughts
from getting all too loud.
When you try to compare
your life and theirs,
all you see
is the perfect partner,
the perfect house,
the perfect lifestyle
with so much to shout about,
because they never share the moments
when all they have
is a worn-out heart
and messy hair.
When their thoughts
are full of despair,
when they have been
looking at your feed
and thinking how lucky you are,
neither knowing
of each other's scars.
Social media can
be a tool for good,
but we are fooled
by what we see and hear.
Fearing always being in last place,
whilst everyone else seemingly has
a smile on their face.
