Have you ever felt
the onrushing doom?
The crushing feeling
when darkness looms.
The sky dims
like an eclipse,
as the sun hides away
behind the moon,
fearing for the beast
that sits
just out of view.
Like a switch being flicked
fear often flips with Déjà vu.
You feel like you have been through
this same storyline over and over
and worryingly
it has never gone well for you.
The beast lurks on this pathway
snaking through
this forest that you walk into.
The beast circles you.
Staying out of view.
Like a hunter
playing with its food.
Have you ever felt terror?
Real terror,
it bursts apart
your heart
with each beat,
it makes your legs wobbly and weak.
Fear leaks over everything you see.
Shadows become faces
grinning maniacally.
Memories of hard days.
Tree branches stab at you.
Roots grab your feet
like zombies clawing
through the grave,
to pull you closer still
before going in for the kill.
As the forest gets darker,
the sounds grow louder.
Screeching and scurrying,
your mind caught in a whirlpool
of worry and
self-preservation.
You see light on the horizon.
But to get there
you have to walk on.
Still shaking. Still fearing.
Heart still aching
from beating too hard.
You wish you had
a get out of jail free card,
or hadn't read horror stories
until they were
engrained into your head.
You wish you were home in bed.
Instead of walking
this lonely pathway of dread.
