I hear them
clawing,
scratching and pawing
at my bolted doorway.
The rattling sound,
clicking and cracking,
skittering flurries,
hurried and scurried.
Slithering sounds
join the thrum,
an aural maelstrom.
All trying to get in.
"What do they want from me" I think.
I hear them,
as they screech
against the windowpane
like nails down a chalkboard.
An assault on the brain.
Cold ice flows through my
terror filled veins.
"Wont they leave me be" the words spill,
shivering as if I've caught a chill.
I hear them on the rooftop
like stormy raindrops,
then they stop.
Silence. Nothingness.
I hear just my breathing.
Air fighting to fill my lungs.
Wheezing,
and my hearts drumbeat
like the firing of a hundred guns.
They are inside,
nowhere I can hide.
I see shapes in the gloom.
Jittery spider-like creatures in my room.
I see others, reptilian and slimy,
I dive for my covers
As they slither beside me
sliding, writhing on empty bellies,
ready to feast on me.
Child sized centipedes
with eyes that bleed.
Spiders with a dog’s growl,
dripping poison from their jowls.
Fangs as sharp as a butcher’s knife,
wanting to put an end to my life.
Snake-like creatures fill the spaces,
my heart races, feeling feint.
My vision fades.
I wake with a start. In my room.
I check my limbs.
Intact.
I check my heart. Still beating.
Sunlight peering through the curtains.
In the corner of my eye
I spy a shadow creeping by,
and I hear a sound
that makes me want to cry.
I hear them scratching and clawing,
slithering and pawing,
as the sun goes dark.
My windows covered
in the spiders that bark.
