First came the meteors
crashing into the earth.
Sinking under the dirt,
beneath the ice,
under the grass,
beside
the disused
overpass.
Like a seed
ready to sprout,
a sapling.
Time passed
as underfoot
armies amassed
like bacteria
they multiply,
Within days they
had us outnumbered,
we just dozily slumbered.
They kept to the dark at first.
In the shaded areas, out of view.
In the shadows, that lingered too long.
Under every tree-lined avenue.
Feeding on electricity,
feeding on the chemical stew,
bubbling in the air we breathe.
Then they started to feast
on me and you.
People dropped like rain,
dripping onto the ground.
Pools of melted flesh
forming all around.
Giving the creatures a taste
but they demanded
that their meals be more fresh
to savour their greed,
to fulfil their needs,
they wanted their meals to still twitch.
Time passed
the massing armies,
they grew.
Onto the streets
they did spew,
like a drunk
at half past two,
after having more than a few,
then topping it off with a kebab,
made with meat sat on the skewers
for too long
and had started to go off.
There was nothing we could do.
They kept coming
in their trillions.
Devouring everything.
People hid as best they could
but the creatures could sense
the copper tang of blood.
Then something miraculous.
The beings started to turn to dust,
combusting under the fierce hot sun.
They were not as hardy as us.
Not as used to the heat,
They drifted away,
becoming one with the dirt
under our feet.
