Why do we
put down
the artistry
as soon
as money
enters the
conversation?
Like suddenly
a beautiful
painting
becomes ugly
due to the
artist
needing to
feed. To stop them
going hungry.
Then it becomes greedy,
just a gluttonous equation.
It isn't
about greed.
Each piece of art
is chiselled
from the stone
remnants
of a broken heart.
So why does it
offend you
so much
when money
is needed for
tools, to carve
this rock apart,
to provide plasters
for the tears we bleed.
Not productive
to society.
Not needed.
Not in compliance
with the
need to finance
the richly oiled
machine.
But didn't you feel?
Did it not
make you laugh?
Were your thoughts
not lifted through the fog
for a few moments?
Away from the
toil and graft,
the soul sucking smog.
The same
as a movie,
or sport,
television
or music,
all escapes
of a sort
that we reward
for their work.
It's just a hobby.
Get a real job.
Lazy. Workshy.
But only
minutes ago
didn't it
bring a tear
to your eye?
Skipped meals
Sleepless nights
our hours 24/7
Not 9 to 5
Torn heartstrings,
hoarse voice
parr for the course.
But it's a choice
you exclaim.
I reply,
yes, it's a choice
the same
as choosing
to breathe.
