It's all a bit of a conundrum,
this great problem of death.
When we take that final wheezing breath,
we are still so early on out journeys.
Still fledglings, waiting for our wings
to fully stretch.
It feels wrong
that a song
can be cut short before
the chorus has even begun.
We spend so long making money run,
That we miss out on what makes this life fun.
We are born into the world,
a blurry vision of tears.
Then a giant
ticking clock appears.
Marking a date
on the calendar app of fate.
As the grim reaper turns
his hourglass upside down,
those seconds start ticking
like a smile turning to a frown.
We spend our early energetic days,
being led to gates, to sit
in cattle fed sedation.
Chained to desks.
Programming. Education.
Not letting our minds run and play,
because we are told
that this is the right way.
We strive, and fight,
to be the brightest bulb.
To always be right.
but to never question why it matters,
what will happen if we dim our light
and enjoy this movie that we call life?
You will be baited, hated. Castigated
if you so much as think of asking why.
Then it's the 9 to 5,
for a vast portion of life.
You get less time for murder.
If you follow the herd,
do as you are told.
Ignore what you've heard.
Don't raise your voice.
Don't draw attention
upon any worthy cause.
If you just exist,
barely breaching your potential,
then maybe you will only be passed over
for promotion 3 times, instead of 23.
Then retirement calls.
Time to live the life you have thrived.
but now you are too tired,
too dejected with life.
So, you just collapse
into a heap, watching tv,
repeating the same sayings,
bleating like sheep. Ignoring
the beauty that sits beneath your feet,
because you have been blinded
by the litter blowing free.
So, you become another single
crisp packet flowing on the breeze.
Litter to be wiped clean,
once the reaper has been
and your story has ceased.
Thanks for reading.
