A candle in a vast open sky

Have you ever seen

a moonbeam grimace through its sheen

at the loss of day?

Witnessed the moonlight

slowly slip and fade away?

A tear staining the bags beneath her eyes,

have you ever heard her sigh?

Saying no more I give up on night,

because somebody picked fault

with the way she dazzles

like a sequin shines.

Have you ever seen

the sun fizzle out

from the tears washing

his burning heart? Dousing the fire.

Have you ever heard him wail

in rage fuelled doubt? Threaten to retire?

Have you seen him dull his glow

and hide his light from show?

Because he was made to feel small,

a candle in a vast open sky

Have you ever witnessed

the wind, suddenly stop her blustery song?

Because someone said it went on too long,

Did it ever listen to voices saying it was wrong?

When a weatherman said there would be no hurricane,

the wind didn't sit back and suck it in,

accepting words that neglected its energy.

It walked into that day. Prouder than before

and produced an even bigger roar.

Have you ever seen a downpour

flow back up to the clouds,

because it caused uproar?

Or did the rain flow

right over the crowds

wherever it wanted to go?

Not listening to the vocal chorus,

nor choosing a different course,

because of a wall of noise.

It made its own path,

to find its way through this life.

Weather gets maligned,

put down by those that are unkind.

But it gives this world so much love in return.

But does the weather ever stop and say no more?

Because of a vocal minority spreading hate its way,

blind to the goodness of a summer storm,

or a weather-beaten bank holiday.

Deem it wrong, against the grain.

Or does it instead, just go on,

shining, raining, guiding us along,

and will it continue long after we are gone?
